Pikakoivaline kaelus-karkjalg (Poaka maaori k.) on Uus-Meremaa rannikuvetes väga levinud lind. Kahlates madalas vees (milleks on pikad jalad ka vajalikud) otsib karkjalg veeputukaid ja väikeseid molluskeid. See karkjala alamliik on levinud Malaisiast ja Jaapanist Uus-Meremaani. Foto tehtud Waikanae jõe suudmealal, Uus-Meremaa põhjasaarel.
Long-legged pied stilt (or poaka in maori) is quite common in coastal waters of New Zealand. Wading in shallow water (where long legs come in handy), stilt searches for aquatic insects and small molluscs. This stilt subspecies is found from Malaysia and Japan to New Zealand. The photo is taken in Waikanae Estuary, on the North Island of New Zealand.

Tõmmu-sultantait ehk pukeko on Uus-Meremaal väga levinud lind ning selle põhjuseks on asjaolu, et linnule sobib trend, kus mets muutub põllumaaks. Pukeko toitub taimedest (oras, kasvud, seemned, lehed, juurviljad jne) ning mida rohkem on põldusid, seda rohkem on süüa. Fotod tehtud Abel Tasmani rahvuspargis, Uus-Meremaal.
Australasian Swamphen or pukeko is very common in New Zealand as the bird has benefitted greatly from the clearing of land for agriculture. It feeds mainly on plants (stems, shoots, leaves, seeds, vegetables etc) and the more there are fields, the more there is food. The photos are taken in Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand.

Hiireviu, Buteo buteo

Hiireviu, viu, Buteo, Eurasian, Buzzard, Common, Estonia, Kaido Rummel
Hiireviu Harjumaal.
Eurasian Buzzard in Harjumaa, Estonia. Their colloquial name "Dancing Hawk" stems from their habit of landing in open fields (often freshly worked) and dancing up&down - the noise made sounds like rain to worms and makes them rise to the surface. After that, of course, they get eaten by the buzzards. It is not unusual for groups of buzzards to do this at the same time in a single field. This buzzard, though, did not dance but sat silently in a thicket.

Vulkaan Arenali rahvuspark, Costa Rica.
Great Curassow is a very poor flier, it rather uses its long legs to forage for food on the ground and flee for safety into the deep cover of its forest home. If the flight is unavoidable, the bird either glides or flutters awkwardly, with labored wingbeats, to reach higher ground. When a potential predator is near their offspring, curassows may attack even humans, targeting the head and the eyes. Arenal Volcano National Park, Costa Rica.

Fakt on see, et 19. sajandil asustati Uus-Meremaa Austraaliast pärit lindudega (Austraalia on mustluikede kodumaa) ja sealtmaalt on need luiged riigis üsna levinud. Teisalt on välja uuritud, et kunagi varasemalt on ka mustluige üks alamliik Uus-Meremaal elanud, kuid seda lindu kütiti maooride poolt seni, kuni enam polnud kedagi järel. Fotod tehtud Glenorchy Laguuni märgalal, Uus-Meremaa lõunasaarel.
Black Swan is an alien species for New Zealand and in the same time it is not. It is a fact that this swan was introduced to New Zealand in the 1860s, using a flock from Australia (that is the "home country" of the bird). On the other hand it is known that there was a subspecies of black swan before that time but it was apparently hunted to extinction by Māori. The photos are taken in Glenorchy Lagoon Wetland, New Zealand.

Ilmselt kõige igavama välimusega lind Costa Ricas - ühtlaselt pruun aedrästas. Ometigi on tegemist riigi rahvuslinnuga, keda seal maal kutsutakse yigüirroks. Foto tehtud Sarapiqui orus, Costa Ricas.
Probably the dullest looking bird in Costa Rica - completely brown Clay-coloured Thrush. Despite that it's the national bird of the country, locally known as yigüirro. This bird was chosen due to its strong and melodious song that always comes during the start of the rainy season. In addition this thrush has been familiar to the general population since the country's early history, thanks to the species' tendency to live near houses and gardens.

Tuulise ja metsiku Kawhia Kuuma Vee ranna kõrged düünid Uus-Meremaa Põhjasaarel, Tasmani mere rannikul. Ranna nimi tuleb sellest, et kui mõõna ajal labidas ranna tumedasse, vulkaanilisse liiva lüüa, hakkab sealt immitsema sooja, geotermaalse päritoluga vett. Vee keskmine temperatuur on 45 kraadi, kuid see võib ulatuda ka 60 kraadini. Seega pärast enese karastamist jahedas merevees, on võimalik mõnusalt looduslikus kuumaveevannis üles soojeneda.
High dunes of the windy and wild Kawhia Hot Water beach on the North Island of New Zealand, by the Tasman Sea. The name derives from the fact that if during the low tide one digs a hole into the dark sand of the beach, warm geothermal water starts oozing out. The average temperature of water is 45 degrees Celsius but it can even go up to 60 C. So after a short dip into the much colder sea water, one can afterwards relax in the natural hot tub.

Tait on reeglina väga madalat profiili hoidev lind, kes veekogu äärsest tihnikust liiga tihti nähtavale ei uju/jaluta. Seekord õnnestus see (Eesti kohta) üsna kirev lind aga täies pikkuses pildile saada.
Common Moorhen is usually holding low profile and does not come open very often from the protective thicket of a lake shore or river bank. But in this case I was able to capture a full size photo of this quite colorful (by Estonian standards) bird.
Tait, Kana, Tiigikana, Gallinula, chloropus, Common, Moorhen, Gallinule, Estonia, swamp, chicken, waterhen, Kaido Rummel
Fotod tehtud Harjumaal.
As you can see, the bird has very large feet that come in handy when marching on top of the water plants. Moorhen does prefer water bodies where the plant life is abundant. And if these plants interfere with the swimming, the bird has an ability to put its feet in front of itself and glide over the vegetation this way. The photos are taken in Harjumaa, Estonia.
