Metsvint, Fringilla coelebs

Täiesti tavaline metsvint, aga üles võetud Fiordlandis, Uus-Meremaa Lõunasaarel. See liik on samuti Euroopast sisse toodud ning esiti kasvas nende populatsioon hästi aeglaselt. Tänaseks on aga tegemist riigi kõige levinuma vindilisega ning teda võib kohata kõikjal (v.a. kõrgused üle 1400m merepinnast).

Just a common chaffinch but the photo was taken in Fiordland, New Zealand South Island. This species was introduced from Europe and was slow to become established in New Zealand, but is now the most abundant finch that is found throughout the country (except heights over 1400 meters above sea level).

For starters another Taiwan endemic species - Steere's Liocichla or Taiwan Liocichla. Suitable habitat of the bird is in the high altitude forests and the photo was also taken at about 2500 metres above sea level in Alishan Nature Scenic Area, Taiwan central mountains.

Lokutkiivitaja jõudis Uus-Meremaale vähem kui 100 aastat tagasi täiesti omal käel ning tänaseks on end nii hästi sisse seadnud, et teda võib kohata praktiliselt igal pool. Edu põhjuseks on põllumajandus ja linnade areng, mis on loonud linnule sobilikke elupaiku. Foto sai tehtud Otago poolsaare rannaniidul, Uus-Meremaa Lõunasaarel.

Black-shouldered Lapwing arrived to New Zealand less than 100 years ago on its own and has now settled in very well. It can be found across the country and the reason behind the success is agricultural and urban development that have created suitable habitats for the bird. The photo was taken on a coastal meadow in Otago peninsula, New Zealand South Island.

Black-crowned Night-heron is active at dusk and at night therefore they are an easy "prey" for the photographer. During the day the bird just sits by some water body and stares (or sleeps). The photo was taken in Taipei City, Taiwan.

Uus-Meremaa endeemne Tui on sealmail väga oluline tolmendaja, sest linnu lemmiktoiduks on õienektar. On see nüüd söödav suhkur või miski muu, aga kui ta endale meeldiva ja õitest kubiseva puu leiab, siis muutub lind väga agressiivseks ja kedagi teist sinna enam ligi ei lase. Ajal, mil õisi saadaval pole, lähevad kurgust alla ka puuviljad, marjad ning putukad. Foto tehtud Fiordlandi rahvuspargis, Uus-Meremaal.

New Zealand endemic bird Tui is a very important pollinator as its favorite food is flower nectar. Is it the sugar rush or something else but the bird becomes very aggressive when it finds a suitable blooming tree. Everybody will be chased off. If it's a season where there are no flowers then fruits, berries and insects are also in Tui's diet. The photo was taken in Fiordland National Park, New Zealand.

Peaaegu kuu aega on blogis olnud vaikne, aga seda seepärast, et käisin taas piiri taga värsket "materjali" hankimas. Seekord oli sihtkohaks väga mitmekülgse loodusega saar nimega Taiwan. Nende rahvuslindu - taivani lasuurharakat - mul kahjuks pildistada ega ka näha ei õnnestunud, kuid endeemseid liike jäi kaamera ette siiski mitmeid. Alustame taivani bülbüliga, keda võib kohata vaid saare idarannikul ja lõunatipus. Kuigi mainitud paikades nägin neid läbivalt igal pool, siis liik on tegelikult ohustatud ja suuresti seetõttu, et ta seguneb oma läheda sugulase - hiina bülbüliga. Ma küll pole ekspert, kuid ka see isend pildil võib olla hübriid, sest taivani bülbüli müts peaks olema üleni musta värvi. Fotod tehtud Taroko Rahvuspargis.

The blog has been silent for almost a month but this was due to the fact that I was abroad  gathering "new material". This time my destination was a beautiful and diverse island of Taiwan. Unfortunately I was not able to photograph or see their national bird - Formosan Blue Magpie - but still several endemic species found their way in front of my lens. Let's start with one of them, Styan's bulbul, whom you can see only on the east coast and the southern tip of the island. Although I saw the bird a lot in these regions, this bulbul has been listed as a species vulnerable to extinction. Mainly due to the hybridisation with the closely related light-vented bulbul. I am no expert but this fellow on the photos can also be a hybrid as Styan's bulbul should have a full black cap. The photos were taken in Taroko National Park.

Noor lõunakajakas Thamesi lahe ääres, Uus-Meremaa Põhjasaarel. See liik on üks kahest kohalikust (st mitte inimese poolt sissetoodud) linnuliigist, kes ei ole üheski aspektis kaitse all. Lõunakajakaid leidub igal pool ning enamasti peetakse neid kahjuriteks.

Juvenile Southern Black-backed Gull or Kelp Gull by the Firth of Thames in New Zealand North Island. This gull is one of only two native bird species not afforded any level of protection under the Wildlife Act. You can find these birds basically everywhere and mostly they are considered as pests.
