Savanni-sarvnokk, Tockus erythrorhynchus

Savanni-sarvnokk on suur sõber mangustidega. Ta hoiatab loomi vaenlase lähenemise eest (ka nende eest, kes lindu ennast ei ohusta) ning nad jagavad suuresti ka toidulauda. Päris üheskoos nad küll sitikaid ei söö, kuid sarvnokk pigem ei varasta mangustide toitu. Krugeri rahvuspark, LAV.

Red-billed hornbill is a good friend with mongooses. The mongooses benefit from the warning calls that the hornbills give when a raptor is near (even if this predator is not dangerous to the bird itself) and they also eat the same things. Not that they share the critters with each other but the hornbill usually does not steal from mongooses. Kruger National Park, South Africa.

...paarike koos. Sõtkas on lind, kes muide teeb pesa puuõõnsusesse. Võib-olla ei ole see olnud liigile kõige õigem otsus, sest on teada, et linde saab päris palju hukka seetõttu, et pesale lennates ei oska nad õõnsust õigesti hinnata ja lendavad niiviisi hoopis vastu puud. Harjumaa.

Baobabi-kuldnokk, Lamprotornis mevesii

Lõuna-Aafrika põhjaosa on lõunapoolseim piirkond, kus veel ahvileivapuusid ehk baobabe leidub, mistõttu on see lõunapoolseim punkt ka nende lindude nägemiseks. Ahvileivapuud ja ka teised suured puud (nt mopane-puud) selle linnu jaoks olulised elupaigad. Foto tehtud Krugeri rahvuspargis.

The northern parts of South Africa are the most southern places where you can see the baobabs. And as this bird (Meves's Starling) uses large trees (such as baobab and mopane) as habitat, this is the most southern area where you can also see this starling. Elevandirannik, Elephant coast

Elevandirannik asub LAV-i kirdenurgas, iSimangaliso märgala kaitsealal. Need mustad triibud liival ei ole mitte mustus vaid maa seest välja pressiv titaanium. Antud piirkond on äärmiselt maavaraderikas, kuid õnneks toimub kaevandamine väga väikesel alal pargist lõunas ning ülejäänud territoorium on ilusti kaitse all.

The elephant coast is situated in north-eastern part of South Africa, in iSimangaliso Wetland Park. These black lines on the sand is not dirt but titanium that is pouring out of the ground. This area is very rich of minerals but luckily the mining is allowed only on a quite small territory south from there and the other territories are nicely protected.

Ainuke papagoiliik, keda mul LAV-s õnnestus näha ning seda Krugeri rahvuspargi põhjaosas, ehk siis piirkonnas, mis hakkab vaikselt troopikaks üle minema. Antud liik on muide selline, kes oskab inimeste häält järgi teha ning seetõttu peetakse neid ka kodus.

The only parrot species I managed to see in South Africa - a Brown-headed Parrot. I met the bird in the northern parts of Kruger National Park - an area that is already near tropics. By the way this parrot can perfectly mimic human voice and therefore they are sometimes pets.

Inglise keeles viitab selle linnu nimi kalapüüdmisele (kuningkalur e kingfisher), kuid tegelikult toitub välja-safiirlind hoopis putukatest ja väikestest sisalikest. Aafrika haugaskotkas, Hieraaetus spilogaster

Aafrika haugaskotkas on väike (ca 50 cm) röövlind, kes on mandri lõunaosas üsna levinud. Ja liigil läheb üsna hästi, hoolimata sellest, et kohe pärast munast koorumist läheb lahti jõhker olelusvõitlus. Munetakse maksimaalselt kaks muna ja isegi kui mõlemad pojad välja haudutakse, jääb alles neid alati ainult üks. Tugevam poeg tõukab nõrgema tavaliselt pesast välja. Pildil siis ellujääja Krugeri rahvuspargis, LAV-s.

African Hawk Eagle is a small (ca 50 cm) raptor that is quite common in southern parts of the continent. And the species is doing well, despite the fact that a fierce struggle for survival starts right after hatching. Maximum two eggs are laid and even if both chicks hatch, always only one survives (the stronger one pushes the weaker one out of the nest).
