Photographers can get lucky with hazel grouse, because they don't fly
off when they see a person walking half a kilometre away. Instead, they
tend to wait until the last moment, and sometimes only take off when
you're a few metres away. The downside, of course, is that their mottled
plumage often makes them invisible on the forest floor, so the first
moment you notice one is often the moment you see it for the last time.
