Maoori lehviksaba, Rhipidura fuliginosa placabilis, Piwakawaka

Maoori lehviksaba, Rhipidura fuliginosa placabilis, Piwakawaka, New Zealand Fantail, Collared Grey
Maoori lehviksabadel on unikaalne oskus kohandada oma toidusedelit vastavalt ilmale—soojadel päevadel püüavad nad putukaid lennult, jahedama ilmaga otsivad aga neid lehtedelt ja puukoorelt. Külmadel talvedel muutuvad mõnel lehviksabal sulestikud tumedaks, mis on sagedasem Lõunasaarel. Foto on tehtud Waitomo piirkonnas, Uus-Meremaa Põhjasaarel.
Fantails have a unique ability to change their foraging style based on the weather—hawking for insects in flight on warm days and gleaning bugs from leaves and bark when it's cooler. And during cold winters, some fantails develop a darker plumage, a rare genetic variation known as the "black morph," which is more common in the South Island. The photo was taken in the Waitomo region on the North Island of New Zealand.
