Väikehaigur on lõunapoolkera lind - teda leidub nii Lõuna-Ameerikas, Aafrikas, Aasia lõunaosas kui Austraalias. Lisaks reisilembusele on nad ka üsna nutikad - vahetevahel kasutavad nad jõest kalade püüdmisel sööta, visates veepinnale sule või lehekese ning kui kala tuleb seda uudistama, ongi suutäis olemas.
