Väikepütt, Tachybaptus ruficollis

Väikepütt on Eestis väga haruldane ning eriti haruldaseks võib pidada teda talvel (põhimõtteliselt võib heal aastal nende talvise arvukuse kahe käe sõrmedel kokku lugeda). Antud foto näol tegelikult oli tegu proovipildiga. Binokliga olin linnu oma arust identifitseerinud ning siis vaikselt lähenedes tegin fotokaga ka ühe pildi, et olla oma leius kindel. Pärast seda aga läks imelikuks - pisitasa nihkusin jõele lähemale, kogu aeg pütti silmas pidades ja liikudes siis, kui ta oli sukeldunud. Ühel hetkel aga lind sukeldus ja ei tulnudki enam pinnale! Passisin seal vast kolmveerand tundi (üsna hämmeldunult), pidades silmas tervet seda ala, mis jões lahti oli, aga kes enam välja ei ilmunud oli väikepütt. Lootsin, et ta vähemalt ära ei uppunud :) Järgmisel päeval tagasi tulles kordus täpselt sama stsenaarium - pütt sukeldus ja ei ilmunudki välja. Olin üsna veendunud, et ma ei jäänud vahele, sest muidu väga lühikese süütenööriga sõtkad ja jääkosklad olid paigal ning ajasid omi asju. Kolmandal päeval naastes enam väikepütti ei näinud, seega ainsaks pildiks jäigi seesama proovipilt, kus lind oma värskelt püütud saagiga ühel Harjumaal asuval jõekesel ujub.

Little Grebe is a very rare bird in Estonia and especially rare it is in winter (you can count the number of birds that winter here using the fingers of two hands). The photo you see here was actually meant to be a test photo. I identified the bird with binoculars and as I moved closer I took this test shot to be sure that it is little grebe. What happened next was weird - I moved really slowly closer to the river, moving only as the grebe was under water. At one point the bird dived and did not surface anymore. The part of the river that was open was all in my sight and I waited there for almost an hour but no grebe. I hoped that the bird did not drown :) The next day I came back and the scenario was the same - little grebe dived and vanished. I am sure that I did not get caught as the usual birds with short fuse - goldeneyes and goosanders - remained still and went on with their business. On the third day I did not see grebe anymore so the only photographic evidence of the encounter is this test photo where the bird is swimming with a fish in its mouth. Harjumaa, Estonia.
