Alt üles pildistatud ja igav taevas taustaks - see on näide, kuidas tegelikult ei peaks linde pildistama. Keiser-fregattlinnu puhul saab aga selle natuke välja vabandada asjaoluga, et tegemist on linnuga, kes praktiliselt kogu aeg on õhus. Photographing upwards with dull sky in the background is an example how you should NOT make bird photos. But with Magnificent Frigatebird you can excuse yourself with the fact that the bird is almost all the time in the air. Mask-luitsnokkiibis, Platalea regia, Kotuku-ngutupapa

Mask-luitsnokkiibist leidub Australaasias ning tegemist on tüüpilise kahlajaga. Linnu toiduotsinguid võib võrrelda aardeotsijaga, kes käib rahulikult mööda põldu, vibutades enda ees metalliotsijat. See iibis ei jaluta küll põllul, vaid madalas vees, kuid täpselt samamoodi astub ta rahulikul sammul, noka ots vee all muda sees, viibutades seda pidevalt vasakult paremale. Kui sellise tegevuse tulemusel eraldub põhjamudast midagi söömisväärset, tunnetab lind selle oma nokaga ära ja siis juba väga kiireid liigutusi haarab ta toidu oma "labida" vahele.

You can find Royal Spoonbill in Australasia and it is your typical wader. You can compare its food searching technique with a treasure hunter that is combing the field with swaying the metal detector in front of oneself. Spoonbill does not stroll on the fields but in shallow water, but quite similarly it wades very slowly, tip of the bill under water in mud and swaying it from left to right, kicking up debris. When an item is sensed, the spoonbill switches to intensive sweeping and catches the pray with its "spade".

Uus nägu blogis - võsaraat. Selline varblase moodi lind, kes on tegelikult Eestis üsna arvukas. Kuna ta elupaik on põõsastes ja tihnikutes ning sealt lind liiga tihti välja ei roni, siis polegi raat mõnda aega objektiivi ette sattunud. Liigi iseärasuseks on see, et pesitsemisel paare ei moodustu - tegutsetakse hoopis gruppides, kus on mõned emas- ja isaslinnud. Tartumaa.

New face in the blog - Dunnock. This sparrow-like bird (also called hedge sparrow) is actually quite common in Estonia. But as its habitats are thickets and bushes and the bird is usually very shy, I have not been able to see it through my camera lens for many years. Metstilder, Tringa ochropus

Metstilder on lind, keda vahetevahel metsas ikka kohtab, kuid pildile pole teda varem õnnestunud saada. Tavastsenaarium on see, kus märkad lindu sel hetkel, mil ta kõva sidistamisega su lähedalt õhku tõuseb ja ära lendab. Green Sandpiper is a bird that you see in a forest once in a while but until now I have not been able to capture it with a camera. The usual scenario is following - you see the sandpiper when the bird jumps up from the grass nearby and flies away with loud twittering. This time there was an opportunity to meet a guy that was with stronger nerves (or was just tired from the migration). The sandpiper got in front of my camera in Pärnumaa, Estonia.

Pika noka eeliseks on see, et ta pääseb ligi kohtadesse, kuhu teised linnud ei pääse. Nii langevad tema saagiks ka sügavale urgudesse pugenud ussikesed ja putukad. Pildil on lind kätte saanud ühe vihmaussi, mis on üks suurkoovitaja lemmiktoite.

The advantage of a long bill is the access to the places where other birds do not reach. For example some worms and insects that have taken refuge in small, deep holes in the ground are an easy catch for the curlew. On the photo you can see that it has found an earthworm that is the favorite food of the bird.

Harakkormoran, Phalacrocorax varius, Karuhiruhi

Harakkormoran on Australaasia liik, kelle põhiasurkond jääb Austraaliasse. Uus-Meremaal leidub neid põhjasaarel ja lõunasaarel kuni Christchurchini. Just Christchurchi kõrval asuval Banksi poolsaarel (ehk siis levila lõunapiiril) on need fotod ka tehtud. Kui enamasti näeb kormorane istumas kusagil mere kaldal olevate kivide otsas, siis need tegelased otsisid veidi kõrgemat vaatenurka ning olid vallutanud ookeani kaldal kasvanud puu.

Pied Shag is an Australasian species that has the biggest population in Australia. In New Zealand you can find it in North Island and in South Island as far south as Christchurch. These photos are taken exactly there (i.e. on the southern tip of the range) - in Banks peninsula in the vicinity of the City of Christchurch. When usually the cormorants are seen on the large boulders by the sea then in this case the birds had occupied a tree by the ocean to get a better viewpoint.

Maoori lehviksaba, Rhipidura fuliginosa placabilis, Piwakawaka

Maoori lehviksaba on Uus-Meremaa endeemne liik ja ilmselt üks riigi nähtavamaid lindusid. Ning seda hoolimata asjaolust, et ta on vaid 16 cm pikkune ja poole sellest pikkusest moodustab saba. Silma hakkab ta seetõttu, et lind on väga julge ja üritab igal võimalikul ajal ning viisil vaatajatele esineda - lehvitades oma sabaga, tehes vigurlende ja vahest hüpeldes inimestest vaid meetri kaugusel. Maoorikeelne nimi on linnul Piwakawaka ning foto on tehtud Waitomo piirkonnas, Põhjasaarel, Uus-Meremaal.

New Zealand Fantail is endemic to New Zealand and is probably one of the best known birds there. Despite the fact that it is only 16cm long, half of which is the tail. Fantails are very visible as they are bold and try to show off every chance they get - they display their tails, perform acrobatic flights and sometimes approach within a metre or two of people.
