Minu ainsad kohtumised jäälinnuga on millegipärast toimunud talviti, mil neid on Eestis kõige vähem. Vähe on neid seetõttu, et jäälind vajab eluks voolavat vett (mitte jääd, nagu eestikeelse nime järgi võiks aimata), kuid seda meil talviti reeglina napib, mistõttu meie maile jäämine on üks paras julgustükk. Pildil olev isend on selle riski võtnud ning Harjumaalt sellise jõe leidnud. Hoolimata väga käredast talveilmast (alla -20 kraadi), oli vesi lahti ning jäälind tegeles aktiivselt kalastamisega.
For some reason my only encounters with Eurasian kingfisher have taken place in winter when there are only few of them in Estonia. Most of them leave for warmer climate because they need a flowing water to survive and this is one thing that can be scarce in wintertime, so staying here needs some courage. The one on the photo took that risk and luckily has found an open river from Harjumaa, Estonia. Despite the very cold weather (under -20 degrees C), the river was flowing and the kingfisher was actively fishing that day.
