Plütt on väike kahlaja, keda Eestis kohtab pigem harva.
Broad-billed sandpiper is a small wader that you can see in Estonia quite seldom. On the contrary to other shorebirds, it prefers to wander around alone. This sandpiper spends its summers in Arctic Europe or Siberia and in Eastern Africa, South-East Asia or Australasia the rest of the year. These photos are taken on a rest stop on a coastal meadow in Pärnumaa, Estonia, en route to Africa.

Puhmalind, Prinia subflava, Tawny-flanked Prinia, Tawny Prinia, South Africa, Kaido Rummel
See tilluke (ja eestikeelse nimeta) puhmalind on üks nendest liikidest, keda käokommetega linnud oma võsukeste üleskasvatamisel "usaldavad". Antud lind pakub üsna sageli au pair teenust ühele (taaskord eestikeelse nimeta) kangurlinnule. Gautengi provints, LAV.

Tait, Gallinula chloropus meridionalis

Tait, Tiigikana, Gallinula chloropus meridionalis, Gallinula chloropus, African common moorhen, Common Moorhen, Moorhen, Common Gallinule
Meilgi kohatava tiigikana Aafrikas elav alamliik. Suur rasvavaru nimelt aitab kauem mune haududa. Gautengi provints, LAV.
African common moorhen is a subspecies of moorhens, similar birds you can find also in Europe. With moorhens or gallinules it is interesting that the female, not the male, is the one that competes with other females for a mate. In fights, the heaviest female tends to win. She usually picks the small males with large fat reserves because they will be able to help incubate the eggs longer. Gauteng province, South Africa.

Roosa-toonekurg, Mycteria ibis

Roosa-toonekurg, Mycteria ibis, Ibis ibis, Yellow-billed Stork
Krugeri rahvuspark, LAV.
Exemplary subject, knows how to behave during the photo shoot. Otherwise, Yellow-billed Stork is not very social bird, keeps mostly to itself. Most of its diet comes from water - they use one foot to stir up the water to flush out prey and then grab it with the beak. Kruger National Park, South Africa.

As there was a lot of seaweed on the beach, there were really a lot of flies. A lot! And by coincidence the flies are one of the favorite food of this stint.

Kõvernokk-rüdi on kurvitsaline, keda Eestis kohtab pigem harva.
Curlew sandpiper is a wader that you can see quite rarely in Estonia. It nests in tundra and taiga, mostly in Siberia but the bird winters in Australia, southern Asia and Africa. On the route to the latter, it may make a stop in our country as well. The photos are taken in Läänemaa, Estonia.

Howicki kosk

Howick Falls Howick Falls
Legendid räägivad, et kose all vees elab maotaoline koletis nimega Inkanyamba, kellega oskavad suhelda ainult kohalikud šamaanid. Uss ennast kahjuks ei ilmutanud, mistõttu tuleb leppida maastikuvaadetega.
Howick Falls is called KwaNogqaza in zulu language and it means "The place of the Tall One". The waterfall with its 95 metres is quite high but still rather average compared to other cascades in South Africa. According to local legend, the pool at the bottom of the falls is the residence of the Inkanyamba, a giant serpent-like creature. It is said that only local shamans are able to communicate with it. As the worm did not show itself, one must be satisfied with these scenic views.

Plüü, Pluvialis squatarola

Plüü, Pluvialis squatarola, Squatarola squatarola, Grey Plover, Black-bellied Plover, Silver Plover, Kaido Rummel, Sandpiper, wader
My first photo encounter with a Grey Plover or Black-bellied Plover (on the left). Although it is larger than the stints and the sandpipers (Wood Sandpiper is standing on the right), this wader is very edgy. As soon as something suspicious happens, grey plover is the first to take off, making also the other shorebirds anxious. The photo is taken just before the sunset on the shorelina of Läänemaa, Estonia.

Aafrika kahvripühvel, Syncerus caffer

Aafrika kahvripühvel, Syncerus caffer, African buffalo, Cape buffalo Aafrika kahvripühvel, Syncerus caffer, African buffalo, Cape buffalo
Fotod tehtud uMkhuze kaitsealal, Lõuna-Aafrika Vabariigis.
One of the Big 5 - Cape buffalo (or African buffalo). It is the most dangerous animal for the hunters because if you do not take the animal down with the first shot, revenge is inevitable. And it does not mean that the injured buffalo will charge at once  - they are known to ambush hunters that have wounded or injured them. The adage an elephant never forgets would be matched by a buffalo never forgives. They have been known to attack people that have harmed them even years after the event. The photos are taken in uMkhuze Game Reserve, Mkuze, South Africa.

Cisticola natalensis, Croaking Cisticola

Cisticola natalensis, Croaking Cisticola
Foto tehtud Krugeri rahvuspargis, LAV-s
It is quite rare when Croaking Cisticola leaves its main habitat - grass. Everything the bird needs is present on the ground - both food (insects) and living quarters. It builds an oval or ball-shaped framework with a side entrance from living grass, which it then fills in with dry grass. The photo is taken in Kruger National Park, South Africa.

Pied Kingfisher has at least two methods for hunting - lying in wait on a branch above the water and flying in one spot (hovering, like on the photo) in the air. The outcome is nevertheless the same. Florisuga mellivora, White-necked Jacobin

Florisuga mellivora, White-necked Jacobin, Great Jacobin Hummingbird, Jacobin Hummingbird, White-bellied Hummingbird, Collared Hummingbird
Sarapiqui org, Costa Rica.
White-necked Jacobin is usually seen at a high perch or just above the canopy. They are less common at lower levels, except when feeding on the flower nectar. This hummingbird averages at 12 cm, making it quite large compared to other similar species.  This, though, does not make it slower - getting a Jacobin in a frame (not to mention a sharp picture) requires some time, a bit of skill and a lot of luck. The bird is "flapping" its wings upto 80 times per second and the flight speed is upto 50 km/h.  Sarapiqui valley, Costa Rica.
