Väänkael on Eestis leiduvatest rähnilistest oma välimusega selgelt
eristuv. Nime on ta saanud sellest, et häirimise korral pöörab lind kaela
mitmes suunas nagu madu ja ka sisistab rästiku moodi. Vanarahvas hüüdis

Wryneck is quite different in appearance from all the other woodpeckers in
Estonia. It has gotten its
name from the fact that when it is disturbed, wryneck twists its neck
in different directions and hisses like a viper. Locally the bird has
also been called witch snake. The photo was taken in Pärnumaa,
Estonia.
