Nagu nimigi viitab, on tõrurähni põhitoiduks tammetõrud. Neid kogub ta sügishooajal ning ladustab järgmisteks hooaegadeks reeglina puuõõntes. Võimaluse korral tarvitab tõrurähn söögiks ka putukaid, kuid erinevus teiste rähnidega on selles, et ta praktiliselt kunagi ei urgitse neid koore alt, vaid nopib hoopis puudel kõndivaid ja ringi lendavaid sitikaid. As the name suggest, Acorn Woodpecker feeds on acorns. It harvests these in autumn and stores them in hole-studded trees for the coming seasons. Insects are also on the table but they are gleaned from surface of tree or caught in flight. Unlike most woodpeckers, Acorn woodpecker rarely or never excavates in wood for insects.
