Musthuik elutseb hea meelega soistes paikades, oluline on voolava veega mageveekogu lähedus. Eriliseks meeliskohaks on järved, tiigid või jõesopid, millel kasvavad vesiroosid või muud sarnased taimed. Oma pesa ehitab ta kuhugi kaldaäärse risu alla (näiteks pilliroopuhmastesse). Particular favorites are the lakes, ponds and rivers where the water lilies or other similar plants grow. It builds its nest somewhere in the thicket near the shoreline (eg under the reedbed).
