Luitsnokk-part, Anas clypeata

Luitsnokk, part, Anas, clypeata, Spatula, Northern, Shoveler, Shoveller, European, Common, Estonia, Kaido Rummel
Luitsnokk-part ehk lusikalind on oma nime saanud loomulikult oma lameda noka järgi. Ma nüüd ei tea, et kas see tuleneb sellest suurest nokast (mis tõmbab lennates hoogu maha), kuid see part on väga aeglane lendaja. Sellegipoolest on Euroopa luitsnokkade talvitusalad muuhulgas isegi Aafrika keskosas ning osad Aasias elutsevad isendid võtavad igal aastal ette ka üliraske retke üle Himaalaja mäestiku. Foto tehtud Pärnumaal.
Northern Shoveler or just Shoveler has obviously gotten its name due to its large spatulate bill. I do not know that if this is caused by this large bill (that slows the bird down) but this duck is known to be a very slow flyer. Despite that fact, some European shovelers winter even in central Africa and some Asian individuals make a biannual arduous journey over the Himalayas. The photo is taken in Pärnumaa, Estonia.

Paradiisipart, Tadorna variegata

Aotearoa, Paradiisipart, part, Tadorna, variegata, Casarca, Paradise, Shelduck, Duck, New, Zealand, Putangitangi, Hokitika, Kaido Rummel
Paradise shelduck (Putangitangi in maori) is endemic to New Zealand and the species started to flourish after European settlers started converting forest to pasture and creating irrigation ponds. Although these two seem to be from different species, they are actually both paradise shelducks - female has white head, male has black head. The photo is taken in Hokitika region on the west coast of South Island, New Zealand.

Nicoya poolsaar, Costa Rica.
American Great Egret is really focused watching the water. Its main hunting strategy is to stand motionless in shallow water and wait for the prey (fish, frog, some small mammal etc) to come close. Then the egret spears the victim with its sharp bill. Nicoya peninsula, Costa Rica.

Linnu ingliskeelne nimi otsetõlkes on Lõunasaare Kirjumerisk, kuid ametlikul eestistamisel on tast mingil põhjusel saanud põldmerisk (linnu maoorikeelne nimi on Torea).

Kirjukäblik, käblik, Campylorhynchus, rufinucha, Rufous, naped, Wren, Cactus, Carara, National, Park, Costa, Rica, Kaido Rummel
Foto tehtud Carara rahvuspargis, Costa Ricas.
Rufous-naped Wrens live in small family groups and in my opinion there is something very estonian in them as they defend their home by singing (Estonians are known to have regained their independence from Soviet Union by singing - it's a nice myth, but still...). Territories are defended by producing loud song, often as a duet or a chorus and this kind of deterrence allegedly even works. Carara National Park, Costa Rica.

Sarnaselt eilsele veel üks kanaline - Kalifornia tuttvutt (10 punkti nime eestistajale!). Foto on tehtud kaunil Banksi poolsaarel, Uus-Meremaal, kuid nagu linnu nimigi ütleb, on tegemist võõrliigiga. See vahva tutikesega vutike on California osariigi rahvuslind, keda on nii Uus-Meremaale kui mitmele poole mujale maailmas inimese poolt asustatud ja vähemalt Uus-Meremaal on ta ennast üsna hästi sisse seadnud.
Another "hen" like yesterday - this time it's California Quail. The photo is taken in magnificent Banks peninsula in New Zealand but as the name of the bird suggests, it's a foreign species in that country. This funny tufted quail is the national bird of the State of California and it has been introduced to New Zealand (and many other parts of the world) by a man and at least in New Zealand California Quail is doing very well.

Volatinia jacarina, Blue-black Grassquit

Volatinia, jacarina, Blue, black, Grassquit, Johnny, jump-up, Sarapiqui, valley, Costa Rica, Kaido Rummel
Foto tehtud Tirimbina Bioloogilisel kaitsealal, Costa Ricas.
Here I already described the singing behavior of the male Blue-black Grassquits but they have yet another interesting "tradition". During breeding season several males gather at the same place, similar to a traditional lek, and perform conspicuous displays. Each male has different displaying rate and defends its small territory. However grassquit is not a typical "lek-bird" as it is monogamous - as soon as the partner is found, the dancing stops and the pair leaves the playground. Tirimbina Biological Reserve, Sarapiqui valley, Costa Rica.

Not something but someone! Yellow-eyed Penguin (Hoiho in maori) has finally decided to come ashore.
Erakpingviin, pingviin, Megadyptes, antipodes, Yellow, eyed, Penguin, The Catlins, Coast, New, Zealand, Kaido Rummel
More than 3 hours of waiting in the hide finally paid off. These penguins are very shy by nature so if they see some movement on the beach they remain in the water. Therefore the hide was about 200 meters from their nesting site. And they only come ashore once a day - when the sun starts setting, after a long day at sea.
