Selle linnu kohta Nikaraagua leeträhn öeldes on tegelikult poolega eksitud. Sama väide kehtib ka juhul, kui nimetada lindu väike-leeträhniks. Tegemist on nimelt nende kahe liigi hübriidiga, kes elutseb esimese levila lõunapiiril ja teise levila põhjapiiril - üsna väikesel territooriumil Costa Rica keskosas. Kui Nikaraagua leeträhn on kollase kuklaga ja väike-leeträhn punasega, siis nende hübriid (nagu arvata võite ja pildilt näete) on oranži mütsiga. Fotod tehtud Carara rahvuspargis, Costa Ricas.
If you call this bird Hoffmann's Woodpecker you are only half-wrong. The same argument is valid if you call it Red-crowned Woodpecker. This guy is actually a hybrid of the two and these hybrids can be found on the southern border of the range of the first and on the northern border of the range of the second one (that is a small area in central Costa Rica). Hoffmann's Woodpecker has a yellow nape and the red-crowned... well, red. So I guess it is not a big surprise that the hybrid's nape is orange. Carara National Park, Costa Rica.
